HEALTH TIP

Herbs for Health

Savory (Satureja hortensis) is used medicinally to treat digestive problems. Savory has a rich taste and contains very little sodium, so it a good flavoring for those trying to loose weight or adhere to a low-sodium diet. Nit aids digestion, replaces salt, pepper and spices for seasoning vegetables and enhances salads.

Chickweed (Stellaria media) is thought to aid weight loss because of its traditional use as a system cleanser and digestive aid. In China, chickweed is used to soothe and heal skin. Herbalists use juice from the leaves to treat acne, rashes and itchy skin.

Rhodiola (Rhodiola rosea): In a resent Phytotherapy Research study, researchers have found that even a single dose of Rhodiola results in improved ability to cope with stressful situations, including reducing stress-related anxiety. Because of the many varieties of Rhodiola, buy only that specify on the label that the species used is R. rosea.

Kava-Kava in coconut milk is good for calming stress and anxiety. It allows the body to relax while the mind stays alert. The coconut milk makes it taste delicious and the fat in the coconut milk help the body to more readily absorb the kava.

Sage makes a good mouth and throat gargle.

Ashwaganda (Withania somnifera): In the August 2000 issue of Alternative medicine Review, it was reported that Ashwaganda has anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-stress, immune enhancing and rejuvenating properties. It also has little or no “toxicity”.  In studies, Ashwaganda has been known to stimulate immune cell activity and inhibit inflammation, has mild sedative and muscle-relaxing properties.

Comfrey: use ground root and/or leaves as a poultice for bruises, sprains and bone injuries.

Asian Ginseng (Panax ginseng): In research studies, ginseng has been shown to enhance physical and mental performance, help protect the body against stress, modulate hormonal reactions, helps lower levels of stress hormones called glucocorticoids. America ginseng is believed to be less stimulation, therefore more appropriate for those under 50 years old. When used as directed at recommended dosages, ginseng rarely causes side effects. Don’t take larger-than-recommended doses of ginseng and don’t use in combination with other stimulants, such as caffeine.

Peppermint and spearmint soothe the stomach and freshens the breath.

Thyme has antimicrobial and antiseptic properties and is good for cleaning bites and stings.

A change in our diet creates a change in our body, our emotions and our spiritual life.

30 yrs. ago, I was eating meat and physically, I felt 75% okay (from time to time I had bouts of dizziness and pain in my chest), my emotions were going up and down, my mind had difficulty focusing on what I really wanted to do in life and spiritually. I was searching for the truth about what this life is all about. I felt I needed some more information about food and life in general to get me to the point where I would feel 100% on all levels.

This is when I stumbled into the Vegetarian Diet. I adopted the lacto-vegetarian diet and I felt better. Physically, I felt 90% better (my chest pains disappeared and my dizzy spells only came about once a year).  My emotions were 90% better and spiritually, I was 95% okay.

I had been a vegetarian (lacto-vegetarian) for 29 yrs. I love cooking so I learned vegetarian cooking. I converted meat dishes into vegetarian dishes and learned about food combining. I was able to create tasty cooked vegetarian food for myself and others. Food is a very important part of our overall health, physical, mental and spiritual. Food affects the 3 levels of our being.

I support the use of food for holistic health which is based on body, mind and spirit health. Food should be served considering different food requirements of different individuals.

I also wanted to consider the effect of what we eat vs. its effect on our environment. I also considered the ethics with regards to inflicting harm on other beings.

I wanted to know what was the best diet that would lead me to the maximum physical, mental and spiritual development possible for me in this lifetime.

I continued to search and try new things. Two yrs. ago, I ate in an organic raw vegan restaurant. I was surprised that the food (I ate raw pad Thai and raw brownie a la mode) tasted delicious. I never thought it will be more delicious than cooked food. I looked at different articles and living food recipes, tasted and tried them and created my own. After that, I decided that was the diet I was going to adopt because it seemed logical and people on it looked "healthier".   I then eliminated cooked food completely in my diet and adopted the living foods diet. I knew the only way I will be sure this diet is better is by adopting it myself.

Now, I feel 99% good physically ( I smell better, I weigh less and feel lighter, run faster, jump higher, do better yoga postures etc.) My emotions are 99% balanced  and  I got answers to 99% of my life questions (through searching and finding answers from listening and observing people from different orientations, evaluating what they do and how relevant and powerful it is, applying them in my life and experiencing the positive effects of it). This living food diet can help us a lot on our spiritual development. Spiritually, I am also doing what I always wanted to do, create a non-profit organization that will have events where people from different sectors of the community talk about their common goal and doing something about it in love, peace, understanding and brotherhood. If you want to know more about what I do please log on to: www.onegoalinc.com.

I have ongoing private classes for people who want to shift to a living food diet and for aspiring chefs that want to learn a way of harmonizing with food in all levels, eating on leaves the way we do it in Asia (eco-friendly) and using some tools that do not use electricity (energy-efficient).

Aside from the physical food, I do exercises for physical, mental and emotional nourishment ( one that  works for me ), yoga exercises, pranayama, pilates, I lift weights 2x a week, qi gong breathing AM and PM and sun gaze every other day .

With Infinite Blessings,

June Roca
