IN THE GARDEN
Apples have been show to have numerous health benefits-but most only apply to eating fresh, organically grown apples with no waxes. Eating 2-3 apples a day can greatly boost the body’s protection against heart disease.
Figs are high in fiber, magnesium, potassium, calcium, copper, manganese, iron and vitamins C and B6. They have been used for centuries to help fight skin cancer, constipation, scurby, gangrene, boils, and liver ailments.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Are you getting all the nutrients you need?
God designed the human body to have a basic need for a wide variety of nutrients, but the exact amount varies with each person. The recommended daily allowance (RDA) guidelines are just that: recommended and guidelines, and not set in stone. These RDA numbers are amounts for different vitamins and minerals that are appropriate for the “average-size” adult with normal health at the medium age of the nation. “Average size” varies, so you may need more or less. “Normal” health has never been defined, and each person’s needs vary. So learn to listen to your body and what it is telling you it needs.
Where to get your nutrients:
Vitamin A (helps with vision, tissue structure & immunity): Carrots, Dandelions Greens, Kale, Mustard Greens, Spinach, Apricots, Muskmelon, Papaya, Persimmons,
Vitamin C (Antioxidant protection of cells and organs, production of collagen; helps heart, muscles, bones and cardiovascular system, and enhances immunity): Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Kale, Bell Peppers, Acerolas, Black Currant, Grapefruit
Vitamin D (Helps the body use calcium & phosphorus for strong bones): sunshine
Vitamin E (Powerful antioxidant power protects heart, promotes slow aging, protects skin) : Leafy vegetables
Vitamin K (Helps proper blood clotting & bone mineralization): Spinach
Calcium: Alfalfa, Dandelion Greens, Leeks, Parsley, Spinach, Watercress, Almonds,
Magnesium (Necessary for good nerve function, release of blood sugar, formation of cells): All green vegetables
Potassium (Maintains balance of water in body, helps prevent heart attack, needed for removal of toxins from cells): Bananas, Apricots
Selenium (Strong protective effect against cancer, helpful for heart health): garlic, Brewers Yeast
Sodium (Regulates water balance in body) : Celery, Romaine Lettuce, Spinach Bananas
Carotenoids (Protects vision, helps prevent heart disease & colorectal, lung & breast cancers): Carrots, Leafy Vegetables, Tomatoes, Apricots, Watermelon
Flavenoids (Cuts risk of mouth, throat & stomach cancers, defends against heart disease): Citrus fruit

INTERESTING FACTS TO KNOW
The following is from our online raw certification course.
To learn more about the course www.therawvegannetwork.com
There is plenty of scientific evidence supporting
the raw vegan diet. And
further evidence continues to come out all the time. Keep abreast of the
Health section of the newspaper. The medical establishment is largely funded
by the meat, dairy and processed food industries as well as the
pharmaceutical industry so a great deal of conflicting information is also
published. However, the truth is now more and more rapidly becoming known
and accepted more and more widely. A very telling new fact, although not
medical science but based on the science of statistics, is that insurance
companies now offer lower rates to vegetarians and vegans as it has been
proven that the vegetarian diet will extend your life by an average of 5
years and the vegan diet will extend your life by an average of 15 years.

Green Leaves and Fruit
Stacey Barrington, BFA
Raw Lifestyle Coach
Port Coquitlam, BC, Canada
www.greenleavesandfruit.com (...coming soon!)
“Don’t let it ruin your summer.” These were the words of advice from my doctor as she closed my file and moved on to her next patient. I sat there stunned. After several irregular pap smears, my doctor had informed me a cervical cone biopsy, which could cause complications with future pregnancies, would be necessary if my next pap continued to show abnormal cells.
With the hope of one day having children of my own and the threat of a cone biopsy looming a mere 90 days away, I searched tirelessly on the internet to see what I could do. Within 72 hours I went 100% raw. Three months later, I had my first regular pap smear in two years. No biopsy required.
I have now been raw since June 2006. For the first 3 months I jumped into 100% raw and in addition to fruits, veggies, nuts and seeds, I included raw milk cheese, sashimi, rare seared steak and manna bread. After the pap test came back normal in September I relaxed a bit and went 80% raw with all the foods listed above, eating one or two cooked meals a week.
Having maintained that structure until December 26, 2007, I felt inspired to take the leap and go 100% raw vegetarian. I included raw fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds, raw milk cheese and manna bread. Then in July 2008, I further refined my diet to 100% low fat raw Vegan and currently eat mostly fresh fruit mono meals, greens when I crave them (usually romaine heart leaves and celery) and the occasional handful of nuts or an avocado. When I go out to eat, I still really enjoy the more complex raw combinations at raw restaurants but rarely prepare them at home.
With over 10 years of coaching experience in the entertainment industry working with actors and models, I bring a wealth of experience both as a private coach and workshop educator.
In addition to my Raw Certifications at The Raw Vegan Network and a BFA from Simon Fraser University, I’ve also attended the Institute for Vibrant Living in Fort Bragg, CA, completing two Certificates (Natural Hygiene Raw Nutritional Sciences and Maximum Athletic Performance) with Dr. Douglas Graham.
People often ask, “What was the hardest thing about going raw?” My answer? Nothing really. It’s been a great learning experience and a lot of fun. I love my food! I eat more now than when I ate cooked food and easily maintain my weight without dieting at all. I truly believe that most people are looking for a way to stay healthy, happy, lean and fit. What’s great about a Raw Vegan Lifestyle is that you can stay lean, be kind to animals and help heal our planet. Now that makes me happy.

FAVORITE RECIPES
Stacey’s Three Favorite Recipes
Banana Boats
16 oz Bananas
8 oz Romaine Heart Leaves
This is my lunch almost every day of the week at the moment.
I buy the pre-washed Romaine Heart Leaves.
Pretty simple stuff: peel a Banana, pop it in a Romaine Leaf and devour!
Banana Papaya “Ice Cream”
2 large Bananas
1 small Papaya
You need a Vita-Mix for this one.
Peel the Bananas and chop into bite size pieces. Put the pieces into a freezer zip lock back and lay flat in the freezer.
Cut the Papaya in half, remove the seeds and scoop out the edible fruit. Chop into bite size pieces and place in a freezer zip lock bag. Again, lay bag flat in the freezer.
After at least 8 hours in the freezer, empty all fruit into your Vita-Mix.
Using the tamper, blend the fruit on high until you get one smooth run thru the blades.
Scoop into a bowl and enjoy!
Laughing Giraffe Vanilla Almond Snackaroons
Okay, you got me. I don’t make these at home. You can buy these at select Whole Foods in Arizona and Southern California. They don’t sell the Snackaroons here in BC, but I always pick up a few bags when I’m in LA. Crazy decadent good!
