FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Look Beyond Organics -- Watch Out For Genetically Modified Foods!
While you may have heard about the most common GM food sources, such as corn, many people are clueless about just how much of your produce is now available in GM varieties. And, perhaps even worse, just how many deliberate GMO field trials are actually going on, all across the world.
A perfect example of the repercussions of this practice can be seen in Hawaii, where non-GM papaya seed supplies are now so seriously contaminated by GM seeds that at least 50 percent of organic seeds test positive for genetic modification!
That means you have a greater than 50/50 chance of buying a genetically modified fruit even when buying organic Hawaiian papaya…
Although the U.S. does not require GM foods to be labeled, you can still find out whether or not your produce is genetically engineered, by looking at its PLU code.
|
Conventionally Grown |
Organically Grown |
Genetically Modified |
|
4-digit code |
5-digits starting with # 9 |
5-digits starting with # 8 |
|
Ex: Conventionally grown banana: 4011 |
Ex: Organically grown banana: 94011 |
Ex: GM banana: 84011 |
Here are a few other fruits that are LOW in pesticide residue, and therefore good candidates to purchase as conventionally-grown, however, double-check to make sure you’re not buying a GM variety.
Remember, if you can't afford to purchase all organic food, at least aim to buy produce that has a lower toxic load and has not been genetically modified.

FEATURED NETWORK MEMBER
Jerry Pochop and Pavlina Bozkova

Pavlina’s & Jerry’s raw journey to radiance
First of all we would like to introduce ourselves. We are Jerry and Pavlina, raw couple from Czech Republic. Pavlina is 33 years old and works as a dentist and Jerry is 41 years old and drives his own small company producing clothing. Recently we lived and worked in Sweden and Norway couple years. Right now we are back home and planning our raw future. We have been raw vegans for almost one year.
Our journey started 3 years ago. We got interested in vegetarianism due to our interest in animal rights. We started to cut back on cheese and milk and after few months (March 2007) we became vegans. We definitely felt better, satisfied that we did not participate in eating meat and diary products, lost some pounds but we did not feel higher energy level or higher mental clarity. We spent weeks visiting numerous websites and blogs about food and the most natural way seemed to be raw vegan diet so we started to discover raw world. We liked the fact that it is the only truly naturally way of eating. We were excited about this way of eating. It was amazing to read about people who came through transition. So we replaced 2 cooked meals with orange juice and green juice every day. Gradually we incorporated more and more raw food and cut down cooked food.
Detoxification was not so easy and we had a lot of cravings for our cooked foods. We were lucky we had support for each other. It must be so hard to go through transition and have nobody around. People around us thought this was just a short time diet to lose some weight, but it really was not!! We participate in family and friends parties but we bring our own food and that is, why we are a little bit weird but it means nothing for us.
Today we are 12 month almost 100% raw vegans and feel stronger both mentally and physically than ever before. We bought almost all we need in our raw vegan kitchen – Vita mix blender, Excalibur dehydrator and GreenStar juicer and we are enjoying it more and more. Now it comes so naturally that we eat more and more fresh whole fruit and vegetables and less dehydrate gourmet food. We feel lighter and cleaner.
We checked personally, that if you go raw for couple weeks and then eat even one cooked vegan food you can feel the wide difference. You find out how low quality life is on cooked food. Now we are exploring all the positive aspects of raw food as a high level energy, mental clarity, clear skin, we feel happier and we sleep better and truly enjoying our life.
Our next step was decision to become raw food coaches. Instead of some other raw vegan leaders we were in contact with Vickie and Ed Fisher and they inspired us so much, that we chose to pass their: The Raw Vegan Network's Online Certifications Course. It was so positive time, learning something new what is so clear in substance. It was very interesting journey.
During this time we had an opportunity to prove healing with raw food on ourselves. In April 2009 Pavlina fell on her head during line skating and she was couple minutes unconsciousness. She had serious brain concussion. Thanks to raw food her recovery was very fast and without any complications. She did not use any of medicinal drugs that doctors recommended to her. Doctors were surprised and satisfied how successful and quick was her recovery.
Jerry had high blood pressure and high level of urea and sugar in his blood and was a little bit overweight. He went through blood test 5 month after we went raw and everything was perfect. During this 5 month he lost 20 pounds.
And now a little bit about our dog Dasty. He is 4 years old howavart. First two years of his life we gave him dry dog food but we felt that it was not the proper food for him so we decided to change it. We started to feed him with raw food. Dasty loves all kinds of fruit and vegetables, but his favorite are tomatoes, durian and water melons. He loves celery and spinach too.
It is so satisfying to see him eat what he loves. He is amazingly active, has shinning fur and has no more problems with tooth calculus.
We are happy to be part of Raw Vegan Network. We want to educate people about how to achieve vibrant health with raw food. We want to inspire people, help them with transition and make it fun and easy for them. Right now we are working on our websites. The name of our website is www.rawdiance.com , because everybody who is eating high raw vegan diet is sending out positive radiance. We would like to start our website in November 2009. During December we are going to coach our first raw vegan course.
We are so excited.
Life changing journey to be a better doctor: Pavlina Bozkova
I graduated 7 years ago and a lot of things changed since the time.
I became a doctor because I felt the vocation to help people.
Studies were very difficult and long but I was satisfied.
Lately my perspective changed. I was exploring alternative methods.
Everyday I saw people very sick in my dental surgery and they had not only problems with teeth but they were overweight, they had high blood pressure, diabetes…….
After all my personal studies about nutrition it was clear.
It was time to change myself. I did not want to be a doctor curing only with drugs and surgery. Almost all my patients need to change their eating habits but most of them will rather undergo surgery than make a change.
Nutrition is not well taught, if taught at all in most medical schools.
After the medical school you perfectly know all signs of diabetes and other debilitating diseases and all possible combination of drugs but you have absolutely no idea about how you can help your patients with proper diet- raw vegan diet.
Today I am happy I enjoy all benefits of eating the raw vegan diet and I see some of my patients trying to change their eating habits because they want to be as happy as their dentist.

FAVORITE RECIPES
Jerry Pochop and Pavlina Bozkova
Czech Republic
We would like to post two of our favorite recipes and one of Dasty´s.
Tomatoes filled with basil pesto
Pesto
2c fresh basil
¼c pine nuts
1T olive oil
1/4t salt
2t lemon juice
Pulse all ingredients in a food processor until broken down, but leaving some texture to the finished pesto.
You have to prepare tomatoes before filling. Cut away tops of tomatoes and scoop out the inside soft part of tomatoes. You get nice dish for your pesto.
So you only fill up tomatoes with pesto, garnish with basil leave and you have delicious and easy dish for every occasion.
Mango- Vanilla Smoothie
3 cups water
2 cups mango
½ cup pitted dates
1 vanilla bean
2 bananas
½ cup mint (optional)
Blend all ingredients together until smooth. Will keep in the fridge for 2 days but we like it best totally fresh.
Dasty´s favorite food
He loves tomatoes. Tomatoes must be almost in every meal. In the summer he loves to creep into our green house and harvest cherry tomatoes by himself. All of his meals we sprinkle with olive oil. Oil is great for his shining coat.
1 apple or other seasonal fruit like pear, plums….)
1 small zucchini
1 carrot
3 tomatoes
2 cups spinach or other green leafy vegetable (in the spring we use nettles and dandelion)
1 cup sunflower seeds
1 cup almond pulp – the rest from our almond milk
2 tablespoon olive oil
Blend sunflower seeds and almond pulp with apple and 4 tablespoon of water until smooth.
Slice zucchini, carrot, tomatoes and stir with the mix.
Sprinkle with 2 tablespoons olive oil.
After such meal is Dasty loaded with energy and we spend amazing time playing outsider in the nature.
