QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS
I enjoy your newsletters - my husband and I have been working at going mostly raw and were quite successful for the first couple of months. We've slipped a little bit the past couple of weeks as our schedule was interrupted significantly - we're trying to get back on track, so I've been re-reading the couple of newsletters I have received and look forward to getting these back issues to help encourage us to keep moving in that direction! We already know the benefits of going raw, and the risks with standard food, it's just a matter of actually DOING it! Thank you for your help! --Kadi

HEALTH TIP
Common Drug Interactions with Herbs, Vitamins and Food
Vickie Fisher, owner Raw Vegan Network
There are four cycles that all medications go through: absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination. After a medication is ingested, it is absorbed from the intestines, distributed throughout the body, metabolized (broken down) in the liver, and eliminated from the body through the kidneys.
There are many factors that interrupt these cycles which lead to interactions. Some drugs may interfere with blood circulation and affect the distribution of medications or herbs to affected parts of the body. Ingestion of antacids will reduce the acidity of the stomach, decreasing the absorption of herbs or other medications. Some drugs may be harmful to the liver or kidneys, impairing the ability of the body to break down and eliminate the herbs or medications.
Interactions vary due to dosage, sensitivity, metabolic rate and the type of herb or drug ingested.
Ginger: a gram or so of powdered ginger can help ease nausea, but it also interferes with platelet action. It should not be taken with blood thinners like aspirin or Warfarin.
Gingko Biloba is used in the treatment of memory loss and to improve blood circulation. It has blood-thinning properties and should not be used with anti-coagulants or before surgery.
Guarana is used as a stimulant and diet aid and contains 3-5% more caffeine than a cup of coffee.
White Willow is used for pain, headaches and fever. It may exhibit similar reactions as aspirin (which is derived from white willow).
Vitamin C absorption is reduced by aspirin.
Calcium combined with diuretics may contribute to a higher risk of hypocalcaemia.
Iodine combined with diuretics can lead to increased risk of hypothyroidism.
Iron can lead to reduced absorption of antibiotics.
Bananas are high in potassium and do not combine well with heart drugs and can lead to dangerous potassium build-up.
Grapefruit Juice interacts with calcium channel blockers, cholesterol control medications, oral contraceptives and many allergy medicines. The juice modifies the body’s way of metabolizing the medication, affecting the livers ability to work the drug through a person’s system.
Orange juice increases the absorption of aluminum, so it shouldn’t be consumed with antacids containing aluminum. The acidity in OJ decreases the effectiveness of antibiotics.
Milk decreases the effectiveness of antibiotics and doesn’t mix well with laxatives containing bisacodyl.
Grilled Meats: the chemical compounds formed when grilling meat may prevent asthma medications containing theophyllines from effectively working, increasing the possibility of an unmanageable attack.
High-fat diets can cause kidney damage and drowsiness while taking anti-inflammatory and arthritis medications.
Turmeric should be avoided by persons with symptoms from gallstones.

FEATURED NETWORK MEMBER
Cathy Dance
Marietta, GA
Cathy Dance a 36 year-old mother of two graduated from Villanova University with a B.S. degree in 1991. She relocated to Atlanta, GA where she pursued a career in filmmaking for 10 years. Cathy’s mother took ill in the fall of 2001 and like a fearless soldier she rushed back to Philadelphia to be by her side. Not knowing much about health or natural healing, Cathy spent several months researching alternative ways to fight her mother who had been diagnosed with lung cancer. They immediately began a strict, organic, vegan diet and sought counseling from herbalist and experimented with non- traditional therapies, which seemed to help somewhat. But the fight was too furious and her mother’s battle was lost by the late summer of 2002.
After loosing her mother, Cathy was desperate for answers. This desperation led her to a close friend for comfort. Her friend gave her a book that ultimately changed her life and outlook on natural healing. This book based its credence on all cooked food as being poisonous for your body! Cathy reflected on her journey with her mother to heal her body and even though they had adopted a vegan diet, they where still eating cooked or “dead, poisonous food”. And if they where to have achieved a live body, they should have only been eating living food! Could this be true? Cathy continued to read more books and research this raw food, living food diet.
Later that year, Cathy experienced some major health concerns of her own. One of which was M.S. She decided against traditional medicine, completely turned her life over to 100% raw food and her trust in God. Four years later she has no evidence of this disease and she feels better than she did when she was 16! She has helped and counseled family, friends and referrals into a raw food lifestyle with miraculous results. Cathy completed her full course study through the Raw Vegan Network earlier this year and is expanding her network of clients. She really believes that organic raw food, sunlight, exercise and a positive mental state is the best medicine to heal your body of any and all disorders.
