HEALTH TIP
Best Choice of Food for Your Pets
Vickie Fisher, owner Raw Vegan Network
I am writing this article because at the end of May 2006, my husband and I were
blessed to adopt a two year old Doberman-Rotweiller. I have always been a pet
lover and have had many dogs in my lifetime. Anyone who knows me understands I
am very much into health. I would like everyone to eat healthy. However that is
a choice.
Now it is different for our pets, they don’t have a choice. They eat what we
feed them. I wanted to find the healthiest dog food I could find. In my
research, I found discouraging facts about many of the commercial pet foods.
What legally can be used in pet foods is absolutely frightening. Most pet food
companies want us to believe that they use only quality ingredients. In most
cases, this is false advertising. Most use the lowest-quality ingredients that
are usually left-over, disease-ridden meats, with other toxic materials that
would otherwise be dumped into a landfill.
A
factor that most people fail to understand is that grains are unhealthy for a
dog. The fact is that most animals have a very hard time digesting all grains.
They are not needed in our pet’s diet at all, and the pet is better off without
it.
Since my husband and I are raw vegan, we looked into the same diet for our dog.
But in my research, I found that it is natural and okay for pets to consume
animal meat. In nature, dogs and cats will naturally hunt and eat animals. It
wasn’t an easy decision for me to make because of how we eat; however, I wanted
what was best for my dog. I know I have a choice in choosing what I feed my dog
and I want to feed her the highest quality food I can find.
I wanted to make sure my dog’s diet was raw and organic. I found many foods that were organic but cooked, and found foods that were raw but not organic. My final decision came with the knowledge that if she ate organic cooked foods, she will be missing too many important nutrients. So I had to make a choice. I decided to give her raw and organic fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds and meats.
Yes, it might cost a little more, but my dog is worth it. If I didn’t feed her this way, I probably would be paying more for vet bills later on. It’s not that much more money to feed her healthy when you look at it that way.

FEATURED NETWORK MEMBER
Sasha Fisher
Raw Food Dog
Hi, my name is Sasha, and I am the four-legged member of the Fisher clan. My adopted parents are Vickie and Ed Fisher, owners of The Raw Vegan Network. I came to live at the Fisher household in May of 2006. I am a two year old Doberman-Rotweiller, who grew up eating the “standard American doggie diet “of mostly dry dog food.
You may be wondering how hard it is for a dog to transition from a diet of dry dog food to eating raw foods. When I moved in with “Mommy” and “Daddy”, they said they would only buy one bag of the dry dog food to mix in with the raw food during the transition period. After two days, I was spitting out the dry dog food and leaving it on the floor. I thought this raw stuff sure tasted better.
Now, I’m not saying all dogs will transition as quickly as I did, but in time they will discover raw foods are much tastier. “Mommy” says it’s better for me too (see Health Tip in this e-newsletter).
Let me tell you about the life I lead. I live on what we call “Covenant Acres” with “Mommy” and “Daddy” Fisher. It is a wonderfully, peaceful 10 acres with plenty of space to roam. I have a fenced in yard, but I like it much better when we do things out on the acres (we have been busy landscaping with trees, scrubs and flowers and preparing for growing our own organic fruit and veggies with a garden and greenhouse). Remember, I am a Doberman-Rotweiller, and I love to exercise. I have learned not to chase vehicles, but get to run along side the tractor with “Mommy”. When the weather is nice, we get to go for a 3 mile walk. But, my favorite exercise time is when “Daddy” takes the ATV (all terrain vehicle) out and I get to run the three miles. I usually run it at 15-20 miles an hour. Let me tell you about my meal times. My morning meal consists of eating a raw meat and veggie stew and my afternoon/evening meal is made up of raw fruit and sometimes nuts and seeds (see favorite recipes in this e-newsletter). Life is great out here on the acres. We are not secluded though. There are other houses on neighboring acreages where my special four-legged friends live. Sometimes they come over for a visit and play. We also have quite-time where I lie in front of the wood burning stove or on a rug where I bring out all my toys to chew. I also get to play toss with “Mommy” and “Daddy”. Life is great out here on the acres, where we hear the coyotes howl and the neighboring cows moo and horses neigh.
