QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS
Hi
This is the 1st time I have contacted you..... to say how happy I am
that you transitioned your new baby from commercial food to "raw". I
also adopted a mixed breed guy (mostly terrier) almost 2 years ago....
and changed him to a more suitable diet. He eats raw meat and
vegetables and greens with fruit occasionally but no nuts.
One thing he loves is raw bones which I get at our local farmer's
market. I give him one daily and you should see his teeth.... they are
as white as chalk...l the brown stains and plaque practically gone. So
this is just to congratulate you and encourage you
I also want to thank-you for your newsletter. I eat about 95 percent
raw in an area without any local support... so your newsletters (and
others) are very helpful
Sincerely, Joanie Gregory
Hello,
I enjoyed your latest newsletter and am glad to see more people switching from kibble to raw meat for their dogs. I, too, did much research to determine how best to feed my rescue Great Dane that I love so dearly, and discovered many of the same things that you did about the dreaded kibble. I was also disappointed to have to feed meat, being a high raw vegan myself, but I do understand that dogs are carnivorous by nature, unlike humans, and thrive best on meat, so I bite the bullet and butcher the meat for him. I must say that meat looks more than ever like dog food to me now, and not like an option for my own consumption! That is one plus for having to handle the yucky stuff.
Please note, however, that it is not safe to feed dogs all fruits. For example, enough grapes can kill a dog! So please alert your readers to be careful about this. The materials I have read seem to indicate that dogs really don't need anything but meat. Mine will sometimes eat grass, but they are very healthy on simply chicken leg quarters and beef brisket with some raw eggs and beef liver once a week. It simplifies things and motivates me to continue feeding them this way. Also cheaper and faster. The meat comes very cheaply from Wal-Mart (quarters are only $4.35 for a ten pound bag and brisket is $1.39 a pound). Some folks might be more willing to do the switch if they don't have to prep elaborate recipes and such.
Just ideas you may or may not want to share.
Keep up the good work with your newsletter. We need all the help we can get out here being encouraged to walk this path.
Blessed, Healthy & Prosperous Be, Shalom Serene Shick
Greetings--thank you for your response and
encouragement for my
newsletters. Yes, I will pass your info on to my readers, for I
plan to include responses of what others are feeding their dogs
(some include meat, others strictly vegan). Yes, I knew about the
grapes, so we don't feed her them. As for simplicity, the fruit
and veggies she eats are the same as what we eat and are prepared
with our meals and put aside for her meals. We chose to feed her
free-range grass-fed beef along with venison, because of the
added hormones and antibiotics in store bought meats. Thank you
again for the encouragement. Blessings—Vickie
Excellent! I only wish I could feed organic
meats, but for 2 very
large dogs on a disability income budget, I just can't afford it.
It does bother me to have to give them stuff from the evil
slaughterhouses, but I feel that it is still better for them than
kibble. So you may want to let folks know that there is a less
expensive option for those who simply don't have the resources to
got the best route. It is sort of like the organic fruits &
veggies situation: I buy as much as I can for myself, but know
that it is still a better way to eat even when I have to get
inorganic.
Anyway, keep on keeping on!
May you continue to be blessed and healthy, prosperous and
joyous!
Shalom
Hi Raw Vegan Network,
Just thought I would share my dogs food recipe with
you. Tiger is a 14 year old border collie who has been
raw for 5 years. He still looks forward to 2 to 3
hours of hiking per day in Philadelphia's wonderful
Wissahickon park.
The only time Tiger goes to the vet is for his annual
check up. He has had no other ailments to speak of. He
has no arthritis, and his hearing, vision, and skin
are still perfect.
I make Tiger's food once per week, and it keeps well
in the fridge. I put 4 pounds of yams through my
champion juicer with the blank insert. Then one pound
of carrots, and perhaps an apple or pear or two. If I
have some left over green smoothie, that goes in too.
Next I grind up about a pound of flax seed in my
Vitamix blender, and mix this in. Next I melt about a
cup of coconut oil, and mix this in. Last I mix in
four pounds of organic ground beef.
Tiger is a fussy eater and does not care for fruit and
vegetables. He would prefer just the raw meat, but
this is not enough bulk. He would get fat and
constipated. With a little coaxing he eats a large
amount of his food each day. This batch lasts us about
a week, depending on how active Tiger is. ALL other
dogs who have sampled Tigers food LOVE it. I figure
the cost is about $22 to $26 per week ( tiger is a
small-medium sized dog at 30 pounds ).
I hope your readers find this useful.

My name is Scott Jackson and in December of 2005 I was a whopping 298 pounds and at 5’6” this meant I was morbidly obese. I was tired and fed up with how I looked and felt. I didn’t want to live like this any more. Migraine headaches, heartburn, pain in my joints, backache, dizziness, shortness of breath, and a host of other problems plagued me daily. That was just my health. Socially was another story all together. I felt like I was stared at constantly. I could imagine people talking about the really “fat” man. I worked with the public and I knew that my size was hindering me in being able to perform my best. I am sure I wasn’t taken seriously due to my size.
December 2005 I decided I needed to take action. I worked with a nutritionist who helped me start on my path. She suggested that I eat whole foods. Almost immediately, I began to feel better. It was a step in the right direction. It was not until I had read a magazine called “Living Nutrition” that I found what I was looking for.
During 2006 I started eating a 100% raw food diet. My life and body went through an amazing change. I lost over 100 pounds in less than six months. Needless to say this really changed my life and inspired me. I studied everything and anything I could about raw food and the diet. I studied and graduated from the Ekaya Institute as a Raw Foods Chef and Lifestyle Coach/Nutritional counselor. I also hold a fourth degree black belt in the martial arts and incorporate the mental training into my lifestyle. I have also worked for a large Nutraceutical company as a trainer and studied to be a naturopath.
I have written a book called Raw-licious Healthy and Delicious Recipes and I am making it available in e-book form at no charge for people signing up for my newsletter at www.raw-licious.com or www.rawweightloss.com until the printed version comes out. It will be available at my website or on Amazon.com. I am also teaching classes at Colorado Free University on starting a raw food diet and some hands on recipes. I am working on a 30 day challenge coaching program for people starting a raw lifestyle. March of this year my wife and I will be moving into a motorhome in preparation for traveling the country talking about raw foods. I will be giving classes and talks about this wonderful lifestyle. We should be on the road later in 2007.
