I have always been a non-fiction book worm. I am particularly fond of health, environment, fitness, population, simplicity, and fair trade. The health side led me down the path to vegetarian, vegan, and raw starting in 1999. The natural slow progression of self-education which is so familiar to many raw foodists, was my path too. Taking no chances with my fitness and health, I read as much material as I could get my hands on. I recently finished the Transformational Institutes Essential Natural Hygiene course. It is based on much of Herbert Shelton’s ground breaking work. It is a great natural living primer and is so in line with many fundamental biological functions. It promotes idealist fruitarian lifestyles, which can be a nutritional hazard for someone with present health problems. I wanted to find a middle ground and that has led me back to the nature “raw”.
I joined the Air Force in 1996 and have 10 years left to serve. Our new “Fit to Fight” culture left me suffering with exercise induced, debilitating migraines. Over the past 7 months of striving to maintain a high raw lifestyle, my migraines are in remission. I lost 15 pounds that had crept on as a “healthy vegetarian”. Female related hormonal fluctuations have become non-obtrusive to non-existent. I feel more connected to the natural cycles of life and the world. Going raw has grounded me, given me phenomenal health, wellness, and energy. As with any journey, a relapse or processed food meal, leaves me feeling terrible. I equate grains to the feeling I had when I quit smoking 2 years ago, they are addictive. You have to have balance and continue working towards your goals. We as raw, are so far ahead of the game; we are winning even when we lose a few yards.
Seeing family, friends, and co-workers uneducated, self-induced suffering has led me to crusade a time or two. They cling desperately to their (processed food, animal flesh, alcohol, tobacco, etc…) addictions. Upon self evaluation, I realized I had to make this journey myself. Others do to. The key is to be informational, non-confrontational, and let your lifestyle show them the truth. The negative reception by those clinging desperately to societies norms, not yet ready was very disheartening at first. Then I decided, why not help those that are ready to learn instead of forcing my opinion on the masses. It is possible to bark up the wrong tree. Even my husband of 6 years is starting to make his own health commitments. I have tried to let him make his own journey, although he would probably disagree. Now he is starting a journey that he won’t have to go alone, I will be with him as he learns and asks questions.
I was very fortunate that the Military community here in Germany has a full schedule of stateside certified instructors arriving from February to May. I have enrolled in YogaFit, AFAA Primary Group and Personal Trainer courses. Special classes include resistance training and senior/plus yoga. I am maximizing this opportunity and hopefully I will walk away fully AFAA/Yoga Fit certified. When it comes full circle, I want to help those that are ready to make healthy lifestyle choices. Healthy lifestyle choices are not those promoted by the USDA and American Dietetic Association (ADA). These are government institutions controlled by lobbyist; the Recommended Daily Allowances (RDA’s) are manipulated by the American Cattle, Poultry, Dairy and Pork Associations. What is promoted as health by the government keeps people ill and dis-eased.
The body is a beautiful self-healing organism. When you place it in its optimum environment, nourish it with nature’s bounty, and remove toxic debris; you have found the key to your true potential. I hope to help others on that journey and continue to push myself to new heights. The mind, body, spirit triad cannot function when a part of the whole is neglected. Wellness entails the total package and I believe that is where we can all help other. I have started Wood’s Raw Wellness to give people the opportunity to find their own health rewards. It is the first endeavor that is in line with my personal beliefs. It is not my JOB, but my passion. I think that is what makes it so special.
